T-Mobile’s Synchronized Mob

24 01 2009

I really like this guerilla, or viral, or whatever you want to call it, advertising campaign from T-Mobile. These dancers blended into Liverpool Street Station and began a set of choreographed dancing. Some complain that this borrows its style from “Improv Everywhere”, the loose-knit guerilla art group in New York that has been known to stage similar public spectacles. I am of the opinion that this is much better than Improv Everywhere’s obnoxious, snooty, and clumsily executed performances.

Also, it gets a point across eloquently. During the performance, “audience” members whipped out their camera phones to send pictures to their friends and loved ones. At once, we see both the spontaneity of life and the warmth and ease with which vibrant moments can be communicated to those who mean the most to us.

My only complaint is that most of the songs were kind of terrible and, quite honestly, if I were in a rush to get to a train, my sense of wonder would not hold me back from from knocking over anyone doing the twist. Maybe the watusi.
